“Hey.”
Frightened and wide-eyed, a young girl clothed in tattered rags and encompassed by her long, tangled hair gazed up at the boy standing before her. Instinctively, she pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. No one was there. No one was there. She was safe, and so was everyone else. Her eyes squeezed shut in hopes that, once they opened again, the boy would be gone.

Stillness, silence hung over the room, only slightly disturbed by the sound of a pen scratching against parchment. Black ink poured onto the yellowing pages with graceful contours, expertly employed by the hand of the man that held the pen. He was a dignified man, advanced in years but not disgraced by them.
